Dear John :-)
Point #1
Again the idea of this series was to have a club function that was
'inclusive'..as in everyone can fly in it. The limiting factor was no landing
glide path controls allowed. That kept models like the Ava from having an
edge..they can fly but they can't use the spoilers. That also allowed models
like the Easy Glider foamie which needs it ailerons to fly, but has no
advantages other than they bounce. It also allows guys to use Electric models
like the Radian. The pilot's timer becomes his 'high start' limit...and
again at a big disadvantage in the landing zones. So 2 channels or 100
channels, all were to be welcomed.
The difference between this and a fun fly was simple...no one was fun
flying in our club. Those of us traveling to contests, practiced contest tasks
on Thursdays and Sundays. The DLG guys were doing that, electric guys
doing that and the others like yourself putting up a couple of flights by
themselves. Having this series in a contest format was to get everyone on the
field participating as a club project...and to give the participants an idea
of what contest flying was about and to provide feedback as to their skill
levels compared to their peers.
Somehow, with none of the limits/rules addressed below, our club had more
consistent general participation than it has had for probably 10 years.
Point # 4 The 10' 100 point tape was chosen on purpose and important for
both LSF tasks and for personal feedback to the pilots. If you were hitting
70's last contest,
practice can help you raise that...practice using a 100
point tape.
Point # 6 . With low tech, no glide path control models and pilots who
are lucky to get out once a month for the series...straight seconds works
best and gives the pilot real by
the seconds feedback on his flights.
Point # 9 Was the glaring shortcoming to the whole program, but in the end
we all stepped up with pretty much matched personal high starts
Point #2 Ties in and is corrected by addressing Point #9.
Point # 5 Are determined by the CD on flight day...it doesn't' t make
sense to set 10min flight times if no one in the group is making the 4min
times.
When Tony hooked up in an 8min task and everyone else
was down at 4mins, we all got to sit on our hands while he burned up the
clock.
Point # 7 3 Round min is an LSF Task consideration, and beyond that up to
the CD and pilots to exceed that day.
Point # 10 As John says, this is for consideration prior to the meetings,
and for decision/vote at the meetings. Consider if you plan on
participating next season, be prepared to
state that as it doesn't make any sense to consider, plan
and prepare if we aren't going to participate.
This series isn't for me, I travel the contest circuit,
this is about all of you fellow LASS members who want to be a part of and
participate in some group fun.
The kind of fun that a lot of sailplane pilots around the
world feel is worth spending big money and big time on,
you got to have a taste of that fun and the feeling of
having been a really good rc sailplane pilot a few times, witnessed by your
club mates.
Thanks again John for leading this discussion!

Hello - I started the online discussion trying to get comments from
several flyers. Here are some thoughts for the club meetings.
1 Should the contests be a 2 channel or 2 function? 2 channel could
exclude V tails I've heard.
2 Should we have a max launch point?
3 Should wingspan be limited?
4 Should a 1-100 pt landing tape be used or use another such as a circle?
5 What duration times do we use?
6 Should the times be precision duration or just duration?
7 How many rounds should we fly?
8 Should there be an entry fee, 1/2 to the club and 1/2 split between top
three?
9 We know new high starts will be used, bought from the same manufacturer,
should be the same length and strength.
10 Anyone have more questions to bring up at the meetings?
