[LASS Soaring] Re: Dam 8;s

I have been to Brookville Dam and think that DS is possible with either a North or South wind. My preference would be for a North wind. I choose this because if you get out of the groove, or get blown downwind, you can land in the grass on the backside (south side). Also, you can fly deeper under the boundary layer for faster speeds. With a south wind, you are in the rocks or lake!
Here is an onboard video from Normandy Dam, Normandy TN with a north wind from over the lake. See the comments for links to the DS portion.

The glider was a Spider 60 @16oz. Speeds were in the 70-90mph range with 8-12mph wind, 35-50' dam.

I can't answer to DS other than say you do that on
the back side of the hill. Other words you still need the S-SW wind on
the face of the hill to DS on the backside. DS requires the low
pressure area on the back side of the hill to work. You only get it
when the wind is from the S-SW at both Brookville and Frankfort.
Bruce Davidson has done a lot of DS at Frankfort. It is tight but Bruce
is one of the best. There was a video on our web site of Bruce doing DS
at Frankfort. I don't know if it is still there.
Welcome back to the LSF it is always waiting for you. If you need any
help with the task let us all know.
