[LASS Soaring] Practice makes for fun, winning doesn't hurt :-)

A while back I wrote an article about why some guys don't fly contests. Its
called Interrogation of a Sport Flyer. It explains that practice is what
makes contests fun, and its not winning that should be the goal but rather doing
the task as perfectly as you can. Got this note from a guy out West.

Gordy,

I had to write and tell you about the contest today.

We had killer weather , 60 degrees and light winds so we had our Turkey
shoot.

Our current president and another upper level pilot flew expert and my
Brother, myself and about 5 other guys were flying sportsman. 5 min, 10 min, 10
min, 10 min were the tasks with a runway landing.

The Pres was flying his Sharon, the other flew his Icon, My Brother was
flying his Supra (not the worlds heaviest) and I was flying my Ava.

End results were My Brother (who swore he would never enter a contest but I
have made him practice and he really digs it now)
2239 points and a first place.

Me 2nd place with 1975 points.

Pres tied with me 1975 points but First place Expert
The other expert 1938 points 2nd place Expert.

I am really proud of my Brother taking a first, but what I am really proud
of is that I kept up with all these high dollar planes with an RES...

There will be much gloating I guarantee...actually I got lucky with some
friendly birds and made my times and only blew one landing, but I wanted to
thank you for taking the time to help me learn how to practice. It has made all
the difference and being competative with these other planes on the same day
with this caliber of pilots means a great deal to me.

It almost takes the sting out of being told my job was eliminated...oh well
more time for practice and a chance to learn something new...
